11th trip – Sailing area Tunisia – 1st stage: Island of Djerba 20th – 27.10th October2022

After our crossing from Turkey through the Mediterranean, our port of entry in Tunisia is the marina on the island of Djerba.

Marina Djerba

Marina Djerba 1 — Portal to Marina Djerba from the land side.

Marina Djerba 4 — The Marina Djerba is a small harbor where sailing yachts share berths with fishing boats and tourist boats.

Marina Djerba 3 — The tourist boats rely on acrobatic performances by the crew and take the travelers on a day trip to a sandy beach.

Marina Djerba 2 — Around 50 small wooden boats are moored in the marina – collected refugee boats – from these summer months alone.

Beaches on Djerba

Djerba Beach 4 — Long sandy beaches and a gently sloping sea are typical of Tunisian beaches

Djerba Beach 2 — Water sports equipment – such as jet skis – are offered

Djerba Beach 1 — Since around 2010, tourism has been declining... leading to empty beaches...

Djerba Beach 3 — …and there are many abandoned hotels and restaurants near the beach.

Djerba Beach 5 — Fine sandy beaches and gently sloping sea make beach holidays comfortable.

Kite surfing

Kitesurfing 1 — Djerba with its long lagoon is a paradise for kitesurfers

Kitesurfing 3 — Kitesurfing is said to be a suitable sport for people aged 9 to 70… at least that’s what the kite schools advertise.

Kitesurfing 4 — …so we also decided…to give it a try….

Kitesurfing 2 — You don't need a lot of strength to kitesurf; the glider is attached to a belt... the key is mastering the kite... this is practiced on land first...

Kitesurfing 5 — ...and then in the water...after about 12 hours, the newcomer should be able to climb aboard. Since there's no wind, we have to end our introductory course early – but we're determined to try it again somewhere else...

Hotel El Fondouk

El Fondouk 1 — The old caravanserai was converted into a hotel and restaurant – previously the animals and goods lived downstairs and the traders' rooms were on the first floor.

El Fondouk 2 — Cocktails are often offered – but usually without alcohol.

El Fondouk 3 — This drawing in the hotel entrance area is a popular photo hotspot.

Djerba Market 5 — Market day – there is a lot of activity

Djerba Market 8 — Vegetables and fruit are offered according to the seasons.

Djerba Market 2 — …and dried fish.

Djerba Market 4 — It's date season...date stands are everywhere - the dates from Tunisia are said to be the best...

Djerba Market 7 — Farmers often sell their goods – like the onions here – directly from their delivery vans.
