Sailing area and travel destination Tunisia
2022/2023
A summary:
Sailing from marina to marina from the island of Djerba to Bizerte…
We sailed (almost) the entire Tunisian coast. In summary, the marinas are simple, but clean and safe. The fact that the country suffers from many shortcomings is also evident in the marinas. Provisioning options are decent, and prices are low. Therefore, many long-distance sailors winter here, and in some marinas, there are real communities.

Traveling through the country with a rental car…
Our attempt to book a rental car online through the usual providers failed. We rented a car and only later realized that the providers no longer had a branch in Tunisia...
The local provider stepped in quickly, and we were very satisfied with the process and the car. We rented the car for 18 days and started a round trip, starting in Hammamet.
We quickly abandoned our attempt to rent private accommodations – the hotels were simple but clean. The roads in the countryside are well-maintained – but in the cities, there's a real commotion, and traffic rules are hardly ever observed – you need nerves of steel.
We never felt unsafe either in Tunis or on our travels through the interior. However, the vendors and guides who suddenly appear at tourist attractions are very persistent and pushy, and not always friendly. This diminishes our sense of well-being. All prices are negotiable and have a wide range. However, if you don't agree on a price beforehand, it will end up being expensive – they often add "extras" that cost extra. We didn't find any official local tour operators – everyone here tries to hustle and bustle, so we only did what we could explore on our own.
However, we have never experienced any assaults or thefts.
What struck me as particularly negative was the huge garbage problem throughout the country – even in the most remote areas there is garbage everywhere.
Tunisians are linguistic geniuses – French, English, German, Italian, Spanish… many certainly speak in different languages, preferably for commercial use.
