The Green Grotto Caves – Natural and Cultural History of Jamaica

The Green Grotto Caves are among the most important cave systems in Jamaica and are located on the north coast between Montego Bay and Ocho Rios.

Green Grotto Caves 4 — Length: about 1.525 meters They are accessible to the public. Geologically, the caves were formed by the dissolution of limestone over millions of years.

Green Grotto 5 — Stalactites and stalagmites are characteristic features. The constant microclimate inside – cool and humid – still favors the formation of these structures today.

Green Grotto Caves 6 — Wooden walkways and stairs lead down to a depth of about 12 meters.

Historically, the caves have had a varied use. Originally, they served as a refuge for the indigenous Taíno people.

During the colonial period, they were used as hiding places by escaped slaves. In the 17th century, they are also believed to have provided temporary shelter to Spanish settlers and later to British troops. Furthermore, there is evidence that smugglers used the difficult-to-access caves as storage facilities.

Green Grotto Caves 7 — Some trees have deep roots in the porous limestone rock.

In the 20th century, the Green Grotto Caves were used for military purposes at times, including as a depot for weapons and supplies during World War II. They were only later developed for tourism, and today access is only possible as part of guided tours.

During the tour we only saw a very few bats – according to the guide, these disappeared after Hurricane Melissa in October. 2025 largely disappeared – perhaps only temporarily…
