Shore excursion through the north of the Canary Island of Gran Canaria

We've rented a car for three days and want to explore the north of the island. The tourist office has given us a large number of brochures listing all the sights we can visit—we can't possibly fit that much in—so we're choosing the destinations that seem most interesting to us.

Here is our selection.

First we head to the small town of Moya.

Galdar

Painted Cave

The Cueva Pintada is the most important find of cave paintings on Gran Canaria – the paintings are dated to the 11th century.

Rediscovered at the end of the 19th century, scientific research only began at the end of the 20th century – and it was discovered that the cave painting was part of an entire village of around 50 houses.

This entire complex was enclosed with an elaborate steel structure and made accessible by walkways.

The museum opened in 2006.

Canary Botanical Garden

Our next destination is the Jardin Botanico – a public garden that can be visited free of charge.

There are parking spaces above the garden, and various paths lead through the grounds.

Guayadeque Gorge

Our next trip takes us to the Guayadeque Gorge.

Here we have a little refreshment before we set off on our hike.
