What do you really need on a long journey?
Comfort on a long-distance voyage is more than just a luxury—it means quality of life, relaxation, and energy for the next leg. On the SY Joline, we've tried many things to make everyday life on board more pleasant: from energy supplies and washing machines to air conditioning, a fully automatic coffee machine, and an induction hob.
Here we show you which features have proven themselves to be useful for us – and what we wouldn't want to do without, even after months on board.
Comfort – Luxury – Ballast
Before we set sail, we had many ideas about what we would need for our life at sea. Some of them proved to be viable and useful, others not. On our journey so far—approximately 13.000 nautical miles and over two years at sea—our priorities have become clearer and, in some cases, changed.
In discussions with other crews, we repeatedly see that what is an absolute minimum for one crew may be unnecessary ballast for another. Things that are convenient on a catamaran may not work on a monohull.
Our list is intended as a suggestion for everyday life on board and is just as individual as the question of the perfect boat or one's own lifestyle.
🌀 Washing machine on board
Yes—we really did install a washing machine! And it was one of the best decisions we've ever made for permanent living on board.
And to say it in advance, we did not choose one of those small 3 kg machines, but a full-grown 8 kg washing machine on board our blue water yacht Joline.

🌬️ Ventilation & Cooling
Good ventilation is essential to combat mold, heat, and a bad mood on board. These things have brought a breath of fresh air:
✅ 12V fans in every cabin area
✅ Air conditioning in the owner's cabin. This can be operated without shore power from the battery bank.

Atmospheric lighting and intelligent use of storage space make the difference between an emergency solution and a home.
